In December 1940, Nankai Railway and Hanwa Electric Railway merged, and Hanwa Electric Railway became the Nankai Yamanote Line (now JR Hanwa Line). Two years later, the station opened as a connecting station between the same line and the Koya line. Mausoleum of Emperor Nintoku , located on the west side of the station, is the largest keyhole-shaped burial mound in Japan. The mound has a total length of about 486 meters and a front width of about 305 meters, and is known as one of the world's three major tombs, along with the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in China. On the south side of the burial mound is Daisen Park, which has various facilities such as the Pagoda of Peace, the urban greening center, the Japanese garden, and the Sakai City Museum.
