Suminoe station opened in August 1907, when the section between Namba Station and Hamadera Koen Station on the Nankai Railway was electrified. At that time, a directly operated thermal power plant, Suminoe Power Plant, was constructed in Suminoe Village, Higashinari District (now Nishisuminoe, Suminoe Ward).

"Suminoe Garage" was completed in February 1921. It was elevated along with this station in April 1977, and has an effective track length of 4,782 meters and a capacity of 150 cars.
