Wakayamashi station opened in March 1903 when the Kinokawa Bridge (current inbound line) was built, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003. The first station building was destroyed in an air raid in July 1945, and the second station building opened in 1955, and the third station building opened in 1973. The current building "Kino Wakayama", which will be the 4th generation station building, opened in June 2020. Consisting of a commercial zone, hotel, office, library, etc., it contributes to the development of the region as a new gateway to Wakayama City.
