The head temple on Koyasan was founded 1,200 years ago by a priest named Kukai, posthumously known as Kobo Daishi. The Konpon Daito (great stupa) is a symbol of the mountain and Kongobuji temple. The area is imbued with historical significance, including the Okunoin road, where the gravestones of Japan's famous historical figures, including Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi and other members of the Tokugawa family, were constructed. The mountain is also known for its delicious sesame tofu and vegetarian cuisine. Throughout all the seasons, the changing color of the flowers alters the natural view.
We recommend you climb a bit higher up the mountain also to visit the Tateri Kojin Shrine, located above the clouds.
